Use Microsoft Word's automatic Header and Page Number functions rather than inserting them into the text of your paper manually. This keeps this administrative material from "bumping" text during the editing process or creeping into the published version.

The APA rules for "running heads" are given on pages 229-230 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (§8.03):
a maximum of 50 characters, counting letters, punctuation, and spaces between words;
flush left;
all uppercase letters;
at the top of the title page and all subsequent pages;
do not use your name to identify each page, since it will have to be removed if the manuscript receives masked review.

The requirements for the Title and Byline are given in §§ 2.01 and 2.02; the text formatting is detailed in §8.03; examples of a formatted manuscript are shown on pp. 41-59.

To generate page numbers:

Click on the "Insert" tab of the Ribbon at the top of the screen, then select "Page Number" in the Header & Footer section.
In the drop-down menu, choose "Top of Page", then "Plain Number 3", which will insert the page numbers flush right.

To start numbering on the second page with 1

Follow the steps for removing the page number from the first page (below).
On the Insert tab, in the Headers & Footers group, click Page Number, and then click Format Page Numbers.

In the Start at box, type 0.

To generate Flush Left header:

While in "Header and Footer Tools" open, place cursor immediately to left of page number.
Type your header text in ALL CAPS.
Enter "Tabs" until header text is flush left.

To remove the page number from the first page and edit first page header:

Click anywhere in the document.
On the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup Dialog Box Launcher (see picture below), and then click the Layout tab.
Under Headers and footers, select the Different first page check box, and then click OK.
On first page, edit header to be preceded by phrase "Running Head:"

Notes: If the Different first page check box is already selected, do not clear it. Instead, delete the page number in the First Page Header or First Page Footer area.
