The Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index page explains:  “The Consumer Price Indexes (CPI) program produces monthly data on changes in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services.”

CPI data can be used, among other things, to compare the buying power of a dollar in different years.  This can be done from 1913 to present using the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Inflation Calculator.
