Our library has several reference books that describe both modern and historical world cultures:

Country-specific reports are available online in Country Reports journal in the Business and Company Resource Center database and Economist Intelligence Unit's  Country Report in Business and Company Resource Center and  Business Source Premier databases.  About 75 print books from the Library of Congress's Area handbook series give detailed country-specific information as well.  The CIA's online World Factbook has convenient search tools.

The History in Context - World (History Reference Center) database provides pathfinders for "Countries, Cultures, and Civilizations" organizing online journal articles, images, and encyclopedia entries (click on "View All" link to right of "Countries" headline to see alphabetical list):
